How to Keep Your Fraser Fir Fresh All Season
A fresh, fragrant Christmas tree is the centerpiece of holiday cheer, and the key to keeping it looking its best all season is proper care. Whether you picked your Fraser Fir from Christmas Mountain Farms or are planning your visit to one of our lots, these tips will help your tree stay vibrant and healthy through the holidays.
1. Start with a Fresh Cut
Before placing your tree in its stand, make a fresh cut about ½ inch from the base. This opens the tree’s pores, allowing it to absorb water more effectively and stay hydrated.
2. Use a Sturdy Tree Stand with Water
Choose a stand that holds plenty of water and keeps the tree upright. Your Fraser Fir will absorb a surprising amount of water in the first few days, so make sure the stand can hold at least 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter.
3. Keep It Hydrated
Check the water daily and never let it run dry. A dehydrated tree will lose needles quickly and may become a fire hazard. Remember, a fresh tree can drink several quarts a day, especially in a warm room.
4. Placement Matters
Keep your tree away from direct heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, heaters, and sunny windows. Heat accelerates drying, causing needles to drop faster.
5. Maintain a Cool Room Temperature
A cooler room helps slow moisture loss. If possible, try to keep the room temperature below 70°F. This keeps your Fraser Fir vibrant and helps preserve its fragrance.
6. Optional Tips for Extra Longevity
Consider using a tree preservative in the water.
Mist the branches lightly with water to keep needles hydrated.
Avoid heavy ornaments on the outer tips of branches—they can weigh the tree down and cause needles to drop.
